As discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) continue to grow, many individuals remain uncertain about its impact on their careers. Will AI displace jobs or enhance productivity? This ambiguity is particularly concerning for students making crucial career decisions, as they grapple with what skills to pursue to remain relevant in an AI-driven world.

Joan Mbesya, an ICT expert with a deep understanding of AI, emphasizes that AI will become an integral part of various professions. She advises professionals to explore AI applications specific to their fields. “I encourage you to study AI within your expertise, as organizations will increasingly integrate it into their operations,” Mbesya stated at a youth forum.

The University of Derby anticipates that AI will transform multiple industries, citing examples such as AI-assisted disease detection in healthcare and automated recruitment processes in human resources.

Prof. Chris Bussell from the university notes that today’s youth will enter a future that vastly differs from the past, much like the transition from feudalism to the industrial age. “AI is reshaping our world, impacting cognitive processing and the way we engage with technology,” he explains.

New Careers Emerging

According to a World Bank report, generative AI will create new job opportunities. These AI models can help users generate text, images, and videos, thereby enhancing human creativity. For instance, writers can utilize generative AI to develop drafts, while designers can create prototypes.

“There will be a growing need for professionals skilled in designing, developing, and maintaining generative AI systems,” the report states. Essential skills will include effective questioning of AI applications and ‘prompt engineering.’

To adapt to AI’s increasing prevalence, individuals should take proactive steps. Experts recommend that anyone, regardless of their field, learn about AI. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) offers several strategies for entering the AI field:

  1. Learn Programming: Since AI stems from ICT, mastering programming languages like Python, Java, C++, and R is crucial.
  2. Embrace Mathematics and Statistics: Proficiency in algebra, calculus, and probability is vital for anyone looking to specialize in AI and machine learning.
  3. Enroll in Courses: Pursuing formal education in AI through online platforms or university programs in data science or related fields can provide a strong foundation.
  4. Gain Real-World Experience: Staying informed about AI developments through blogs and research, alongside participating in internships and projects, is essential for skill enhancement.

Alice Kimani from the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (Kepsa) encourages young people to invest in new skills, noting the rapid changes in knowledge and market demands.

Surveys reveal a high demand for ICT qualifications in Kenya, with employers struggling to find qualified personnel in new technologies like AI, cloud computing, and machine learning. This presents a paradox: many job seekers lack the necessary skills for available positions.

In addition to technical expertise, soft skills such as self-management, adaptability, and initiative are highly sought after. The International Labour Organisation highlights the value of both skill sets, which can be developed through internships and simulated work experiences.

Understanding AI is just one avenue for enhancing career prospects; other valuable specializations include cybersecurity, big data analytics, and cloud computing. By adapting to these changes, individuals can improve their employability in an evolving job market.
