Top police commanders at Nairobi’s Central Police Station were transferred following criticism over the handling of anti-femicide protests on December 10. The peaceful protest was disrupted with teargas, leading to four arrests, prompting condemnation from various quarters.
Central Subcounty Police Commander Doris Kimeli was recalled to police headquarters and replaced by Stephen Okal, while Central Officer Commanding Station Isaac Nur was moved to Mulot, replaced by Benjamin Talam. The changes follow investigations initiated by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and ordered by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo expressed regret over the excessive police force, describing the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He acknowledged the importance of the protest during International Human Rights Day and assured that those responsible would face legal action.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International Kenya and the End Femicide KE Movement, condemned the police response as a violation of human rights and democratic principles. The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi also criticized the incident, reaffirming support for peaceful protests and efforts to combat femicide.
Protesters arrested during the demonstration were later released unconditionally. Meanwhile, investigations into the incident continue, with rights groups calling for accountability.
