Most shops in Nairobi’s Central Business District remained closed in anticipation of the OccupyCBD demonstration on Tuesday. A spot check revealed that many stores were locked up as police patrolled the area.
Activist Boniface Mwangi confirmed on Monday that the peaceful protests would proceed as planned until the government takes responsibility for the deceased protesters.
As of June 16, 2024, the majority of shops in the CBD were still closed.
Mwangi stated, “Let’s not assume we have achieved anything yet, as there is nothing substantial to celebrate. Why hasn’t the President reached out to the families of the deceased to offer an apology?”
The government has acknowledged that at least 25 protesters lost their lives during the protests, while the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported a higher toll of 41 deaths and 360 injuries.
During the initial phases of the Gen Z protests on June 18 and June 25, 2024, demonstrators occupied the National Assembly.
