Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has raised concerns over his safety after armed men in civilian attire allegedly attempted to access his hotel room at Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Mwangi, who is in the country to support detained Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, said the individuals did not identify themselves.
“My life is in danger. There are armed men in plain clothes outside my room,” he posted on X. Later, he said the men had moved to the hotel lobby and were apparently waiting for him. He expressed readiness to cooperate once Tanzanian lawyers involved in his case arrived.
The incident unfolded as former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, along with activists Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid, were detained at Julius Nyerere International Airport ahead of their deportation. They, too, were in Tanzania to express solidarity with Lissu.
A day earlier, PLP leader Martha Karua, LSK council member Gloria Kimani, and Lynn Ngugi of the Pan-African Progressive Leaders Solidarity Network were also detained and deported. All were attending in support of Lissu, who is facing treason charges.
Human rights groups and opposition leaders have accused President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government of intensifying repression through politically motivated detentions, abductions, and unexplained killings.
