Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has committed to completing three major stadiums before the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. These stadiums include the Moi International Sports Complex, Nyayo Stadium, and the new 60,000-seat Talanta Sports City Stadium in Nairobi.
Murkomen stated that some of these venues will be handed over to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) by the end of November, in preparation for the CHAN games scheduled from February 1 to February 28, 2025. He emphasized that significant efforts are being made to ensure Kenya’s readiness for the events, with construction and renovation work proceeding as planned.
“We are committed to being ready, not only as Kenya but as East Africa,” Murkomen assured. “We will support CAF to ensure the success of these tournaments.”
Murkomen’s comments came on Sunday during a visit by CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who toured the stadiums to review preparations for the continental competitions. The CS reiterated the government’s dedication to partnering with CAF and ensuring the successful hosting of the events.
“With Kenya’s iconic landscapes, world-renowned wildlife, and sporting heritage, our co-hosting will draw global attention and high attendance,” Murkomen added.
Motsepe, also in the country for a CAF Executive Committee meeting, expressed satisfaction with the progress and confidence that Kenya, along with Uganda and Tanzania—who will also host the games—will deliver successful tournaments.
“I am deeply grateful and proud of the exceptional support from President William Ruto regarding football. With all of us working together, we will elevate African football to among the best in the world,” Motsepe stated.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa and other officials were present during the inspection. CAF had previously assessed the stadiums in June and August.
Uganda and Tanzania have each approved two stadiums: Uganda boasts Mandela National Stadium and St. Mary’s Stadium, while Tanzania has Benjamin Mkapa and Azam Sports Complex.
