Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed that Kenya collaborated with Ugandan authorities in the deportation of opposition figure Kizza Besigye, who was arrested in Nairobi in November 2024.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Mudavadi said Besigye’s visit to Kenya was unclear and raised concerns, prompting his return to Uganda. He emphasized that Besigye had not sought asylum, which could have led to a different outcome.
Mudavadi distanced Kenya from Besigye’s legal troubles, stating, “Kenya cannot take responsibility. He is now under his country’s custody.”
Besigye, a longtime critic of President Museveni, was later charged with treason and illegal possession of firearms. He appeared frail in court following a hunger strike. Uganda’s Supreme Court has since ruled that civilians should not be tried in military courts, a decision President Museveni has opposed.
