A group of MPs, mainly from the UDA party, has committed to opposing a bill aimed at extending term limits for elected leaders if it passes the Senate. Led by Gachugu MP Githinji Gichimu, the six lawmakers urged senators to reject the proposal, citing Kenyans’ more urgent issues, like the high cost of living. The MPs emphasized that this private member bill, introduced by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, is not endorsed by UDA or the Rift Valley region. The bill suggests extending presidential and other elected terms from five to seven years, arguing that a longer term would allow leaders to complete development projects.
