National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has stated that MPs will no longer pursue impeachment proceedings against Cabinet Secretaries. Instead, their role will be limited to oversight.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Ichung’wah urged CSs who feel unfit for their positions to resign rather than waste government and parliamentary time. He emphasized that President William Ruto holds the authority to hire, fire, or reassign Cabinet Secretaries.
Ichung’wah also cautioned leaders against prioritizing certain ministries for personal gain, saying all ministries are equally important.
His remarks follow a year of high-profile impeachment cases in Kenya. In 2024, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua became the first in the country’s history to be removed from office, with 281 MPs voting in favor of his ouster. Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached for the third time, though the Senate overturned the decision due to insufficient evidence.
Former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi also faced impeachment but survived after a parliamentary committee ruled the charges unsubstantiated.
