The Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) has pressed the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) for a comprehensive report on Kenya’s public debt. Deputy Auditor General Isaac Kamau confirmed the report will be presented in the first quarter of the next financial year.
Suba South MP Caroli Omondi called for a full audit of national debt and tax exemptions, and urged the OAG to suggest legislative reforms to strengthen fiscal discipline, especially regarding platforms like eCitizen.
Concerns were also raised about audit delays affecting county revenue allocations, as well as claims that some government institutions budget for bribes to auditors. MPs questioned the integrity of the auditing process.
Kamau defended the OAG’s internal checks, citing staff rotation, ethics codes, and partnerships with the EACC and DCI to fight corruption. He also noted improved media accuracy in reporting audits and pledged to address audit turnaround times.
The committee stressed that transparent, timely, and ethical audits are essential for public confidence and constitutional accountability.
