Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Wafula Chebukati, the former Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a tribute shared on X, Gachagua described Chebukati as a distinguished lawyer, devoted family man, and dedicated public servant who played a key role in Kenya’s democratic processes, particularly during elections.
“His demise has robbed his family of a great father and Kenya of a remarkable leader. He will be dearly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Gachagua stated.
Chebukati passed away on Thursday, February 20, at 11 PM. He had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nairobi for nearly a week, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. However, details regarding his illness remain private.
Chebukati served a full six-year term as IEBC Chair, retiring on January 17, 2023.
Several leaders have sent their condolences to his family.
President William Ruto mourned Chebukati’s passing, describing him as a principled and diligent leader who served Kenya with integrity.
“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in Peace,” Ruto stated.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula praised Chebukati as a highly respected advocate who embodied dignity and integrity in the legal profession. He also lauded him as a steadfast defender of the rule of law and a dedicated public servant whose contributions to Kenya’s democracy will be remembered for generations.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi described Chebukati as a man of integrity and conviction who dedicated his life to upholding democracy and serving the nation with diligence and unwavering commitment.
