A team from Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) conducted a successful intelligence-led operation targeting an al-Shabaab hideout near the Kenya-Somalia border. The operation resulted in the destruction of a makeshift camp used as a logistics base by the militants in Garissa’s Fafi area.
According to police reports, no arrests, injuries, or clashes occurred during the operation on Saturday, November 30. This mission highlights the unwavering commitment of Kenyan security forces, working alongside local communities and other agencies, to safeguard the nation from threats.
The region has long been considered a hotspot for terrorist activities due to its proximity to the porous Somalia border. Security agencies have pledged to remain vigilant and to protect Kenyans from such threats. This operation follows another incident a week earlier, during which four suspects were killed and weapons, including three AK-47 rifles, an RPG launcher, and detonators, were recovered after a firefight on November 22.
Authorities praised local communities for their cooperation and vigilance in reporting suspicious activities, which play a critical role in counter-terrorism efforts. These partnerships are also addressing concerns of violent extremism within local populations.
The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), which has spearheaded efforts to counter violent extremism for two decades, reiterated its commitment to resilience, adaptability, and inclusivity in the fight against terror. Director Kibiego Kigen emphasized the importance of collaboration with civil society, religious leaders, and international allies to secure Kenya’s future.
This operation is part of an ongoing multi-agency effort to eliminate militant activity in the border areas. Over the years, such efforts have significantly reduced terror-related incidents, thwarted numerous attacks, and disrupted al-Shabaab’s operations. However, regions like Mandera, Wajir, Lamu, and Garissa continue to face challenges due to their proximity to Somalia, impacting development and displacing residents.
The government has committed additional resources to bolster security operations in the border regions, aiming to prevent further attacks and restore stability.
