Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting peace and stability efforts in Somalia.
Speaking after the Extraordinary Summit of troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Uganda, Kindiki emphasized Kenya’s role in ensuring the mission’s success. He noted that Somalia’s stability directly impacts the broader Eastern African region, stressing the need to defeat al Shabaab and other extremist groups.
The summit, hosted by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe, brought together leaders including Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and representatives from Djibouti, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
The leaders called for urgent measures to address operational challenges, including mobilizing more resources through the African Union Peace Fund and boosting troop numbers by at least 8,000 to strengthen security gains. They also proposed the deployment of additional bilateral forces to support AUSSOM and Somali forces.
