Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo was shot dead in a targeted attack while in traffic on Valley Road, Nairobi, on the evening of Wednesday, April 30. Detectives believe the assailant, who wore a hood to conceal his identity, had trailed the MP from Parliament, indicating possible insider knowledge of his movements.
The attacker, riding as a passenger on a motorbike, was caught on CCTV monitoring the MP’s vehicle as it stopped along Wabera Street, where his bodyguard had briefly entered an M-Pesa shop. The footage also shows the suspect closely following the vehicle through various city streets, including City Hall Way, Kenyatta Avenue, and Jakaya Kikwete Road. When the car was caught in traffic on Valley Road around 7:40 p.m., the assailant disembarked, fired multiple shots at close range, and fled with his accomplice toward the CBD.
Despite attempts to save the MP, who sustained five gunshot wounds, he was pronounced dead at Nairobi Hospital. His bodyguard and driver escaped unhurt. Investigators have recovered three spent cartridges and are reviewing CCTV footage from multiple locations. Authorities suspect the killing was premeditated and are exploring possible political motives, including how the attackers learned of the MP’s discreet vehicle change.
