Top swimmers from Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar, and Zambia will join their Kenyan counterparts at the Kenya Aquatics National Long Course Championship on May 31–June 1 at Kasarani Aquatic Stadium.
Kenya Aquatics Secretary General Collins Marigiri said the international entries will elevate the competition, which serves as a qualifier for the World Championships set for July 11–August 3 in Singapore.
“The foreign swimmers will make this a highly competitive event. We expect strong performances and possible record-breaking swims. Our rivalry with East African countries adds more excitement,” Marigiri stated.
Apart from results at Kasarani, the selection for Team Kenya will factor in previous performances and FINA points from the past year.
“We have set strict criteria. Only top performers will make it to Singapore,” he added.
Kenya’s elite swimmers, including Haniel Kudwoli, Stephen Ndegwa, Nathan Matimu, and Maria Brunlehner, are expected to compete.
Marigiri also hinted at plans to qualify a mixed relay team, depending on timing and rankings.
Kenya will also send 20 swimmers to the World Masters Championships, running concurrently with the main event.
Meanwhile, top clubs will gather at Regis School on May 24–25 for the Kiambu Aquatics Sprints and Relays, a qualifier for the Long Course meet.
