The opposition United National Congress (UNC) has secured a strong win in Trinidad and Tobago’s parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results, paving the way for Kamla Persad-Bissessar to return as prime minister. The 73-year-old previously held the office from 2010 to 2015.
The UNC’s campaign focused on tackling rising living costs by pledging wage increases and job creation. The victory came at the expense of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM), with outgoing leader Keith Rowley conceding defeat Monday night. His successor, Stuart Young, had triggered a snap election shortly after taking office in March—an attempt widely viewed as controversial and constitutionally questionable.
Persad-Bissessar celebrated the win by highlighting her plans to support public workers, reopen the children’s hospital, and generate over 50,000 jobs. “No-one will be left behind,” she told supporters, promising a government that delivers inclusive progress.
