Israel and Hamas have agreed on a deal that could halt the war in Gaza and facilitate the release of hostages and prisoners, according to the US and Qatar. This would mark a significant breakthrough in the conflict that began in October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel.
While details are not finalized, the agreement reportedly includes a three-stage ceasefire. The first stage involves a six-week ceasefire, during which women, children, the sick, and elderly hostages will be exchanged for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Israeli troops would withdraw from Gaza’s populated areas, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes, and humanitarian aid deliveries would increase significantly.
The second stage aims for a permanent end to the war, with remaining hostages released in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners, and a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
The third stage focuses on Gaza’s reconstruction and the return of any deceased hostages’ bodies.
Key challenges remain, including mistrust between the parties, disputes over which prisoners should be released, and concerns over Hamas’s military capabilities. Previous ceasefires between the two sides have been fragile, raising questions about the durability of this agreement.
The conflict has caused immense devastation, with over 46,700 fatalities in Gaza and severe food shortages. The ceasefire offers a chance for de-escalation, but its long-term success remains uncertain.
