The National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee is set to vet nominees for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Saturday, May 31, 2025. This follows a High Court ruling that allowed the vetting to proceed but temporarily barred the nominees from being gazetted or sworn into office.
President William Ruto submitted the names on May 9, nominating Erastus Edung Ethekon as IEBC chairperson and six others — Anne Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor, Francis Odhiambo, and Fahima Abdalla — as commissioners.
According to a public notice issued on May 30 by National Assembly Clerk Samwel Njoroge, the vetting will take place at the Mini Chamber, County Hall, Nairobi. The hearings, to be led by committee chair George Murugara, will begin at 9:00 a.m. with Ethekon and continue throughout the day with the rest of the nominees.
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula had previously referred the names for vetting, but the process was paused by a court order after a petition was filed. The court has since lifted the stay on vetting but maintained a block on the final appointments pending further proceedings.
The National Assembly has also invited public input on the nominees’ suitability, asking citizens to submit affidavits with evidence. During the vetting, all nominees are required to present clearance from EACC, KRA, HELB, DCI, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, and the CRB.
