The government has issued flood alerts for regions including North Eastern, South Eastern, Coast, Central, and South Rift Valley, warning of storms over the weekend that are expected to ease next week.
The Ministry of Interior highlighted that heavy rainfall in the past week caused flooding in the Lake Victoria Basin and North Western regions, with Kisumu County among the hardest hit. Areas like Kapuothe, Nanga, and Dunga in Kisumu Central Sub-county reported about 200 affected households and 100 acres of crops lost. In Kisumu East, floods impacted 140 households across several villages, while Nanga Primary School currently shelters 47 displaced households, receiving aid from the government, Red Cross, and other agencies.
Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo has been overseeing food distribution in Muhoroni Sub-county for affected families.
The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall across various regions, including the Highlands, Rift Valley, Coastal areas, and Lake Victoria Basin, for the next five days. Isolated heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected during the initial part of this period, with intense rainfall likely in some areas.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to cooperate with disaster response teams and consider temporary relocation for safety.
