The purported viral statement attributed to EACC Spokesman Eric Ngumbi, alleging that Cooperative CS Nominee Wycliffe Oparanya lied under oath before the National Assembly committee on appointments, has been confirmed as false.

According to the fabricated statement, Oparanya was summoned to the EACC offices and recorded a statement on August 23, 2023. It falsely claimed that he, along with his two wives, was arrested from their Nairobi home and interrogated for seven hours during which the statement was obtained.

In response, EACC Spokesman Eric Ngumbi stated that the viral statement is fake and clarified that the Commission has not commented on the allegations raised by Oparanya during his vetting process.

During his appearance before the Committee on Appointments, Oparanya refuted the claims, asserting that he has never been called by the EACC to provide a statement regarding accusations of corruption or money laundering. He maintained his innocence, emphasizing his commitment to safeguarding Cooperative funds if appointed.

Oparanya further disclosed to the committee that his visit to the Integrity Centre was solely to retrieve his children’s phones, which he alleged had been seized by individuals identifying themselves as EACC detectives. He confirmed that no statement was recorded during his visit and stated his disappointment at not being given an opportunity to present his side of the story.

Additionally, Oparanya stated that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has not contacted him regarding any legal matters or allegations.
