Kenyans have been advised to purchase liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) only from licensed providers to ensure public safety and prevent accidents. Joseph Oketch, Director of Electricity and Renewable Energy at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), emphasized that while the government is promoting the transition to LPG, strict adherence to safety protocols is essential.
Speaking in Garissa, Oketch warned that LPG is highly flammable and can cause catastrophic damage if mishandled. He urged consumers to avoid illegal suppliers, noting that EPRA ensures licensed providers comply with safety standards, including regular cylinder testing to prevent leaks and accidents.
Oketch also cautioned against illegal electrical connections and the use of unlicensed operators, urging Kenyans to involve Kenya Power (KPLC) for all electricity connections. He added that EPRA is developing regulations to govern wiring in homes, institutions, and factories while providing a framework for licensing electrical workers and contractors to enhance safety across the sector.
