Mental health issues are increasingly concerning in Meru County. In response, a local advocacy group has launched a mental health awareness campaign aimed at educating the community.
Prince Mwenda, Senior Project Manager at Ripples International, highlighted existing gaps in the implementation of mental health policies. “We recently held a workshop at Kenya Methodist University to educate the public on mental health. Our goal is to bridge these gaps through comprehensive frameworks and policies,” he stated.
During a recent mental assessment clinic at Kinoru Stadium, Mwenda encouraged residents to participate. “We will have four counselors available for assessments, and those in need of further care will be referred accordingly,” he explained. The campaign will culminate in a roadshow featuring a cycling event from Nkubu to Laare, covering approximately 50 kilometers.
Joyce Muriuki, Director of Ripples International, emphasized the importance of awareness. “We need residents to speak out about mental health issues without fear of stigma,” she said. “Those suffering from mental health challenges should not be isolated or labeled as ‘mad.’ In rural areas, especially, there is a significant lack of sensitization.”
Muriuki noted that many mental health issues stem from stress and depression related to domestic life and work, with some cases being hereditary. She encouraged community members to support individuals facing mental health challenges.
Psychiatrist Kellen Mumbi reported that about 25% of the population experiences mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, depression, and suicide, leading to an annual economic loss of approximately Sh62 billion, or 0.6% of the GDP. Mumbi stressed that the implementation of the Mental Health Act 2022 could significantly improve mental health care in both workplaces and the community.
She urged the community to combat stigma surrounding mental health. “People should understand that those with mental health issues are not bewitched; they are capable of being productive members of society,” Mumbi asserted.
