The recent debate against rival Donald Trump has sparked fears among some observers regarding President Biden’s cognitive abilities. Critics have pointed to Biden’s appearance during the nationally televised debate, describing him as physically frail and confused.
In response, over ten House Democrats have called for Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, with Vermont Senator Peter Welch being the first to publicly make this request. Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Darrell West noted that there is a growing sentiment within Biden’s own party for him to step aside and allow for a new candidate ahead of the Democratic convention.
On Wednesday, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a longtime ally of Biden, refrained from endorsing his continued candidacy, emphasizing that it is ultimately the president’s decision while acknowledging the limited time available.
Media scrutiny has intensified since the debate, with numerous opinion pieces urging Biden to withdraw. Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, remarked that Biden’s “halting and disjointed performance” has raised alarm within Democratic circles.
Biden hosted a NATO summit in Washington this week, making efforts to reassure constituents about his age and mental fitness. However, he stumbled during the event, misidentifying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and referring to Vice President Kamala Harris incorrectly.
Despite the pressure, Biden reiterated his commitment to remain in the race. However, analysts suggest that his efforts to quell doubts about his cognitive condition may not suffice, as the conversation surrounding his fitness continues to dominate.
Biden’s recent interview with ABC aimed to reassure voters of his capability, but political scientists have noted that these appearances have not fully alleviated concerns within his party. While calls for his withdrawal are rising, many remain hesitant due to the absence of a clear successor, fearing that a sudden exit could lead to internal chaos within the Democratic Party.
With only 42 days until the Democratic National Convention, Biden warned that any division could bolster Trump’s campaign. Polls indicate that Trump has gained momentum in key swing states since the debate, further complicating Biden’s position as the election approaches.
The likelihood of Trump’s re-election raises concerns among NATO allies, who fear a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy and support for Ukraine. Reports suggest that a return of Trump could weaken the alliance, posing challenges for NATO’s future.
