After a long and demanding semester, a vacation with friends is just what you need to unwind and escape the stress of challenging assignments and exams. For me, this semester revolved around a particularly tough business project. While coding isn’t my strongest skill, I managed to navigate through it.
In my household, casually mentioning a week-long trip to Diani isn’t an option. Instead, it requires careful planning and strategizing. A little white lie helps: I framed it as a school trip, providing detailed expenditure plans for everything from the SGR tickets to transfers, accommodation, and meals.
Of course, I conveniently omitted any mention of alcohol, even though my parents likely suspect that our group would indulge a bit more than just soft drinks. As my parents often say, “We did the same things you’re doing now; it’s your time, you’ll tire out eventually!”
Preparing for the trip also came with its own costs. I had to shop for swimwear and lightweight clothing suitable for the coastal weather, plus some personal grooming for nails and hair.
We booked the 10 PM SGR train and, of course, had a little pregame before departure. The journey took about 5 hours and 15 minutes, landing us at Mombasa terminus around 3 AM. Our transfers were perfectly timed, and within an hour, we arrived at Tafriji Villas, our home for the week. After choosing rooms and settling in, we quickly headed out for groceries, including food and drinks, which our chef would help prepare.
Once settled, we made a beeline for the pool, enjoying the refreshing water and perfect weather—neither too hot nor too humid.
Being on holiday also means navigating different personalities. Some friends preferred to sleep all day, recovering from hangovers, while others thrived on minimal sleep, fueled by energy drinks. Then there are those who eagerly explore activities like camel riding or sunrise watching.
As for me, my routine involved waking up, enjoying breakfast by the pool, soaking up the sun, swimming, and then socializing over meals and drinks. Occasionally, we’d venture out to try local restaurants or visit friends in other villas.
Overall, this trip was an exhilarating experience, marking my first adventure to the coast with friends instead of family.
