A new breast cancer support group has been launched at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), aiming to provide emotional and psychological support for patients, survivors, and caregivers. The initiative focuses on improving life after treatment—a phase often overlooked in cancer care.
During the launch, clinical psychologist Zahra Haji introduced four holistic healing techniques to be used in the support program:
-
Tai Chi – a gentle, meditative movement practice to improve mental and physical well-being.
-
Sound Healing – the use of soothing vibrations from instruments like singing bowls to promote relaxation.
-
Chair Yoga – accessible yoga poses performed while seated or using a chair for balance.
-
EFT Tapping – a stress-relief method using fingertip tapping on acupressure points while addressing emotional issues.
Prof. Mansoor Saleh, director of the AKU Cancer Centre, emphasized the critical need for ongoing support after medical treatment ends. He noted that while doctors manage surgeries and chemotherapy, what happens after discharge—especially the emotional burden and fear of recurrence—requires just as much attention.
The group is designed to help survivors cope with post-treatment challenges, reduce anxiety, and build resilience. By integrating community care and emotional support, it seeks to restore hope and improve quality of life for everyone affected by breast cancer.
