The National Assembly will review the nomination of Abdi Ahmed Mohamud for the role of Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). Speaker Moses Wetang’ula informed the House of the EACC’s request for parliamentary approval, as required by section 16(1) of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act and section 5(1) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary) Approval Act.
“I have received a message from the Chairperson of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission requesting the House to approve a nominee for appointment as the Secretary/CEO of the EACC,” said Wetang’ula. He further noted that Mohamud was selected through a competitive recruitment process.
The Speaker instructed the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs to begin the approval process immediately. The committee is tasked with notifying the nominee and the public of the hearing schedule and submitting its report by December 3, 2024. Wetang’ula emphasized the importance of adhering to the timeline to facilitate the timely appointment of the EACC CEO.
The committee will evaluate Mohamud’s qualifications, experience, and integrity before submitting its recommendation. Currently serving as the Deputy CEO, Mohamud previously held the role of Director of Investigations at the EACC. His career began with the police force, where he worked as an investigator before joining the EACC and rising through the ranks.
If approved, Mohamud will succeed Twalib Mbarak, whose term concludes in January 2025. An insider at the commission, Mohamud’s nomination has been met with approval among EACC staff. His familiarity with the office has raised hopes for continuity in the fight against corruption, despite the commission grappling with thousands of cases and financial constraints.
