The highly anticipated opening match of the Nyanza Secondary Schools boys’ football tournament between defending champions Agoro Sare and Kisumu Day was postponed due to crowd trouble at Cardinal Otunga, Mosocho.
On Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of fans invaded the pitch, forcing officials to delay the game until Thursday. Tensions flared as supporters from both Agoro Sare and Kisumu Day clashed twice before kickoff.
Tom Odhiambo, Secretary of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Nyanza Region, stated, “We could not proceed with the game due to security concerns. The drum-playing fans stormed the field, leaving us no choice but to postpone. The match will now be played on Thursday at a different venue.”
The second match, featuring Sameta High and Matutu PAG Secondary from Nyamira, was also interrupted by fans. Frustrated spectators contested Matutu PAG’s second goal, claiming it was scored from an offside position. At the time of the disruption, the score was tied at 1-1.
In the girls’ category, Nyakach, under the guidance of coach Crispin Odundo, dominated Moremani with a staggering 13-0 victory at Kisii School. Maureen Atieno netted four goals, while captain Velma Awuor, Lillian Adhiambo, and Emily Adhiambo each scored two. Lilian Adiambo, Sharon Odoyo, and Joan Agola contributed one goal each.
“This felt more like a training session for the girls. However, this should not lead to complacency in the next match. Our focus is on reclaiming our title,” Odundo remarked.
Defending champions St. Mary’s Lwak Girls also began their title defense successfully, edging Migori Education Centre 1-0, with Gaudencia Ouma scoring the decisive goal. Coach William Otieno noted, “It was a tough match. Migori put up a good fight. Our target is to retain the regional trophy, and the girls are well-prepared.”
In boys’ volleyball, Nyabondo overcame a set deficit to defeat Nyamira’s Etomo Mixed 3-1 (26-28, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15), while Nyakach won decisively against Migori County’s Kameji School in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-12).
The tournament is sponsored by Nyanza Sports Vibez, a sports equipment store based in Kisii, with additional support from Mwalimu National Sacco and Kisumu National Polytechnic, both of which donated trophies.
