Resignation of Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has officially resigned from his position. In a statement released by State House, President William Samoei Ruto announced that he has accepted Koome’s resignation to facilitate a smooth transition within the leadership of the National Police Service (NPS).
Statement from the President
“His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, Ph.D., CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has on this 12th day of July 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service,” the statement noted.
To ensure a seamless transition in leadership within the NPS and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), President Ruto has issued Executive Order No. 7 of 2024, which enacts significant changes in these vital homeland security agencies.
New Appointments and Acting Roles
In light of the recent changes, President Ruto has appointed Mr. Patrick Mwiti Arandu as the Commissioner General of Prisons, succeeding Brigadier (Rtd) John Warioba, CBS, who is proceeding on terminal leave.
Pending the nomination, parliamentary approval, and appointment of a new Inspector General, Mr. Douglas Kanja, CBS, currently the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, has been designated as the acting Inspector General of the National Police Service.
Redeployments and Appointments of Acting Deputy Inspectors General
Additionally, the President has redeployed Noor Gabow within the Public Service and, based on recommendations from the National Police Service Commission, appointed the following acting Deputy Inspectors General:
- Mr. Eliud Langat – Acting Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service.
- Mr. James Kamau – Acting Deputy Inspector General, Administration Police Service.
Further adjustments have been made within the senior ranks of the NPS, as acknowledged by the National Security Council (NSC):
- Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni – Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU).
- Mr. Gilbert Masengeli – Commandant of the Administration Police Training College (APTC) in Embakasi.
- Mr. William Yiampoy – Director of Operations at Police Headquarters.
- Mr. Kainga Mathiu – Commandant of the National Police Leadership Academy (NPSA) in Ngong.
Acknowledgment of Outgoing Inspector General
President Ruto expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Inspector General, commending him for his service to the nation and wishing him success in his future endeavors.
These changes within Kenya’s security agencies are effective immediately, marking a significant shift in leadership.
