The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has urged Parliament to allocate more funds for recruiting new officers and implementing key reforms.
Appearing before the National Assembly’s Security Committee, NPSC CEO Peter Leley stated that while Sh1.33 billion has been allocated for the 2025/26 fiscal year, additional resources are needed. The commission plans to recruit 10,000 officers this year as part of the Maraga Police Reforms, with similar numbers in the following two years.
Other priorities include expanding the police modernisation program, leasing vehicles, and enhancing the staff house mortgage scheme. Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat noted that the service’s proposed Sh118.42 billion budget aims to modernize security operations and improve efficiency.
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin highlighted concerns over underfunding, stressing the need for advanced technology to combat evolving crimes. The committee, chaired by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo, will review the funding requests before submitting a report for further consideration.
