Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has removed Prof. Amukowa Anangwe from his role as Chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council, effective February 21, 2025.
The dismissal was announced in a Gazette Notice on Friday, citing the Cabinet Secretary’s authority under the Universities Act, 2012, and the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.
The notice stated: “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 36 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, as read together with Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education revokes the appointment of Amukowa Anangwe (Prof.) as Chairperson of the Council of the University of Nairobi, with effect from February 21, 2025.”
The decision follows threats by UoN lecturers to go on strike, demanding the dissolution of the council to enhance efficiency and effectiveness at the institution. They have urged the government to act on their concerns or risk disruption of learning.
