Billionaire Yagnesh Devani has been taken to Kilimani police station, where he will remain overnight until his court appearance on Wednesday, facing graft charges related to the Triton oil scandal.
Devani appeared in court on Tuesday following a 2009 arrest warrant. Milimani Magistrate Thomas Nzyuki refused to grant him bond, citing concerns over fair administration of justice given the outstanding warrant.
Devani is set to face renewed charges in connection with the Triton case, with the prosecution aiming to file these new charges to avoid disrupting the ongoing proceedings against other defendants.
The case, which has been moving forward in Devani’s absence as he was on the run, involves allegations of defrauding petroleum companies by falsely claiming Triton had diesel available at KPC storage in Kipevu.
The magistrate has instructed the prosecution to prepare and present the new charges. Devani’s lawyer, Kenneth Kiplagat, requested bond, but the State argued that Devani’s status as a flight risk justified its denial.
