More than 4,000 residents of Mathioya in Murang’a County are set to gain from a Sh40 million water initiative spearheaded by the Athi Water Works Development Agency.
The Mathioya Water Supply Project, which will source water from the Aberdare Ranges, includes the installation of a 90-kilometer pipeline designed to deliver water directly to local homes.
Upon completion, the project is expected to increase the sub-county’s water coverage from 60% to approximately 70%.
MP Edwin Mugo, who launched the project in Thuita, highlighted that it will alleviate the arduous task of fetching water from distant rivers and improve residents’ quality of life. Mugo noted that despite the presence of major rivers, Mathioya has long struggled with water scarcity.
The project will benefit residents in Kiru, Kamacharia, and parts of Gitugi wards, providing a reliable domestic water supply and supporting local dairy farming by eliminating the need to source water from rivers for livestock.
“This initiative aligns with my campaign promises to enhance water, road, and power infrastructure in the area,” Mugo stated.
He also revealed plans for additional projects, Kandabibi and Gakoe, aimed at further improving water coverage and supporting irrigation for year-round farming.
Elizabeth Githinji, a local resident, expressed relief, noting that the project will end the long treks for water and reduce reliance on wells operated by a few individuals. She highlighted the challenges of waterborne diseases and the historical use of water shortages for political gain.
Esther Mbote added that the project will ease the physical burden on women and children who have long endured back and joint pain from carrying heavy water containers.
“Having clean, accessible water will enhance our hygiene and improve overall living conditions,” Mbote said.
