Alice Wahome, the nominee for Cabinet Secretary of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, has asserted that she possesses the right attitude and qualifications for the role.
Speaking to the National Assembly Vetting Committee on Thursday, Wahome emphasized her commitment to teamwork and her strong work ethic. “I am a team player and take pride in working collaboratively. I am dedicated and believe that I have the right attitude to fulfill my duties as a minister,” she stated.
Wahome, a lawyer by profession, highlighted her familiarity with aspects of the ministry, particularly within the State Department for Lands. She expressed confidence in her ability to address challenges faced during her previous tenure with the support of Parliament.
From October 5, 2023, to July 11, 2024, Wahome served as the Cabinet Secretary for Lands. On July 11, President William Ruto dismissed all Cabinet Secretaries except for Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and the CS for Foreign Affairs.
During her 10 months at the Ministry of Lands, Wahome reported that she successfully initiated several key programs. “I am grateful to President Ruto for this nomination, which I view as a sign of confidence in my previous performance. Subject to approval, I am eager to continue serving in this capacity,” she said.
Prior to her role in the Ministry of Lands, Wahome was the Cabinet Secretary for Water, a position she assumed in September 2023. In this role, she developed frameworks to reduce non-revenue water and facilitate water purchase agreements. She also spearheaded the drilling of boreholes and strategic planning to raise Sh80 billion in funding. Under her leadership, national water coverage increased from 65 percent to 72 percent, and sanitation improved from 26 percent to 32 percent.
