The union emphasized that the sanctity of hospitals and churches has historically been upheld, even in times of war, as safe havens for individuals seeking treatment and refuge.
In a statement, KUCO expressed shock at the recent incident where police forcibly removed patients from Bliss Hospital, describing the act as inhumane and a gross violation of human rights and professional ethics. The statement was signed by Secretary General George Gibore, National Chairman Peterson Wachira, and National Treasurer Mary Boniface.
KUCO condemned recent instances of police brutality during anti-government protests, including the use of live ammunition and tear gas near healthcare workers and facilities. They highlighted the deliberate shooting of MediaMax journalist Wanjeri Kariuki as particularly alarming.
The union asserted that the police’s actions represent a clear affront to the sanctity of medical institutions and patients’ rights to receive uninterrupted care. The deployment of tear gas in proximity to hospitals endangers not only patients and healthcare workers but also the wider public.
KUCO demanded a thorough investigation into these incidents and called for appropriate actions against those responsible. They urged senior police officials to take immediate steps to ensure that healthcare institutions and places of worship are protected from violence and disruption.
“Law enforcement must uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals, especially those who are vulnerable and in need of medical care,” the union stated, expressing solidarity with affected journalists, patients, healthcare workers, and the public.
