Zambian police have arrested Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri in Lusaka, accusing them of attempting to use witchcraft against President Hakainde Hichilema. According to authorities, the two men were allegedly hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of MP Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda, who is currently evading arrest.
Police reports state the suspects possessed “assorted charms,” including a live chameleon, and were promised over 2 million Zambian kwacha ($73,000) for their mission. The pair face charges under Zambia’s Witchcraft Act for “possession of charms,” “professing knowledge of witchcraft,” and “cruelty to wild animals.”
Emmanuel Banda, previously linked to former President Edgar Lungu, is also facing separate legal issues, including robbery allegations in Zimbabwe and an escape from custody in Zambia. The opposition Patriotic Front party claims these charges are politically motivated.
The suspects remain in custody, awaiting their court appearance, while Nelson Banda is reportedly on the run. The accused have not yet commented publicly on the allegations.
