The Trump administration is under political scrutiny after confirming that a journalist was mistakenly added to an unsecured group chat where top U.S. security officials were planning a military strike in Yemen. Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic reported that he was unintentionally included in a Signal chat involving Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, where he saw classified details of the operation two hours before it occurred.
The revelation has sparked outrage, with Democrats calling for an investigation and some Republicans expressing concern over the breach. While the White House defended the military strike’s success, critics view the incident as a serious national security lapse.
Goldberg explained that he received a connection request from what appeared to be National Security Adviser Michael Waltz and was subsequently added to the group chat. During the discussions, Vance allegedly questioned the timing of the strike, citing potential economic consequences. Additionally, messages in the chat suggested plans to make European nations contribute financially to U.S. efforts in securing key shipping routes.
The National Security Council acknowledged the authenticity of the leaked chat and is reviewing how the journalist was mistakenly added. Lawmakers from both parties have called for further scrutiny into the security failure.
