The Ministry of Education has engaged union representatives in discussions regarding the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for Technical University of Kenya (TUK) workers.
The meeting included representatives from TUK, the University Academic Staff Union, and the Kenya Universities Staff Union. TUK workers have been on strike for three weeks, demanding the implementation of the 2021-2025 CBA. The strike prompted student protests last week, citing disruptions to learning that led to the university’s indefinite closure.
Education CS Julius Ogamba, speaking after a meeting with union officials, stated that the ministry has developed a sustainable framework for a structured return-to-work formula. Key discussion points included the return-to-work plan, student enrollment growth, organizational improvements, and overall university strengthening.
Ogamba also presented a proposal with both short-term and long-term solutions, reaffirming the government’s commitment to preventing future strikes through proactive measures across all universities.
