Lesotho has gained international attention following U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that it is a country “which nobody has ever heard of.”
Trump made the remark while defending budget cuts, citing an $8 million LGBTQI+ aid allocation to Lesotho. His statement drew laughter in Congress but was met with shock and disappointment in Lesotho.
Foreign Minister Lejone Mpotjoane expressed the government’s dismay and announced plans to file a formal protest with Washington. Despite the U.S. maintaining an embassy in Maseru and running Peace Corps programs, the remarks were seen as dismissive.
Trump’s comment sparked reactions online, with users highlighting Lesotho’s significance. The German Ambassador to South Africa, Andreas Peschke, called Lesotho the “most important water tower in southern Africa.” Others pointed out the country’s unique geography, high-altitude ski resort, and rich cultural heritage.
Lesotho, a mountainous nation entirely surrounded by South Africa, is known as the “Kingdom in the Sky.” It boasts breathtaking landscapes, a strong diamond industry, and significant water exports. However, the country also faces challenges, including high HIV prevalence and the world’s highest suicide rate, according to WHO.
Trump’s remarks have fueled debate, with Basotho citizens and global commentators defending their nation’s prominence.
