U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of hindering peace efforts by rejecting American proposals that would involve recognising Russian control over Crimea. Trump, writing on Truth Social, claimed peace was within reach but warned Zelensky’s refusal to accept territorial concessions would only prolong the war.
Vice President JD Vance outlined the U.S. position, suggesting a deal would “freeze” the front lines close to their current positions, meaning both Ukraine and Russia would cede some territory. However, Ukraine remains firm that it will not give up Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
Zelensky reiterated that any concession would violate Ukraine’s constitution and international law. Meanwhile, Russia has ramped up attacks across Ukraine, killing civilians and damaging infrastructure in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Marhanets.
As tensions grow, the U.S. shifted its diplomatic focus from London to Moscow, sending special envoy Steve Witkoff for more talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump, who previously claimed he could end the war in a day, admitted frustration with Ukraine’s resistance to a deal and hinted at a possible meeting with Zelensky during Pope Francis’s funeral.
