Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei has apologized for sharing a deepfake video falsely attributed to CNN. In a statement on Friday, he expressed regret for any confusion caused and thanked those who identified the video as AI-generated.
Sing’oei admitted to mistakenly posting the video, which appeared to be a commentary by CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sudan’s peace efforts and Kenya’s role. He emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating with partners and tech firms to develop watermarking tools for AI-generated content to prevent misinformation.
Additionally, the ministry is working on the School on AI Diplomacy (SAID) at the Foreign Services Academy to help policymakers handle emerging AI challenges. Sing’oei issued another apology, acknowledging public vigilance in flagging the misleading content.
The issue was first highlighted by CNN journalist Larry Madowo, who confirmed the video was fake. Sing’oei later deleted the post, which he had initially shared to support Kenya’s diplomatic engagement with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
