The Ugandan Police Force has refuted allegations that an officer shot and injured opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine.
In a statement posted on its X page on Tuesday, the UPF clarified that Bobi Wine sustained an injury after stumbling while entering his car, which his team has claimed resulted from a gunshot.
According to the police, Bobi Wine attended a peaceful thanksgiving ceremony hosted by Lawyer George Musisi in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District. After the event, he and his team left the venue and began a procession towards Bulindo town, despite police advice against it.
The UPF stated that Bobi Wine’s insistence on continuing the procession and blocking the road led to police intervention. Officers at the scene reported that Bobi Wine stumbled while getting into his vehicle during an altercation, resulting in his injury. However, Bobi Wine and his team maintain that he was shot.
The police have announced that an investigation will be conducted to determine the facts of the incident. Bobi Wine has been taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo for initial treatment. The UPF has committed to investigating the alleged shooting and any related events.
