Members of Parliament have rejected the Mung Bean Bill, 2022, which sought to introduce a new levy on mung beans (ndengu). The Bill aimed to regulate the production, processing, and marketing of mung beans in Kenya, including imposing fines of up to Sh1 million for operating without a license. It also proposed a framework for licensing growers and traders through county governments. The Bill faced resistance from small-scale farmers during public participation. Despite the rejection, the Bill could be reintroduced after six months with significant changes.
