Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has embraced technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve worker safety and emergency response in the oil and gas sector. Through modern leak detection systems and world-class fire training facilities, KPC is setting new standards for occupational safety.
Central to this transformation is the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas (MIOG) in Eldoret, where KPC offers hands-on training based on American National Fire Protection Association standards. Fire safety expert Nathan Mwakio, who helped develop MIOG’s curriculum, stresses that building confidence, leadership, and communication skills are critical for effective emergency response. The facility’s environmentally friendly approach and advanced breathing apparatus station ensure continuous preparedness.
MIOG provides training in firefighting, workplace safety, first aid, disaster preparedness, and the Nebosh International General Certificate. Regular refresher courses and strict standards have positioned MIOG among East Africa’s top safety institutes.
Veteran firefighter Ben Cliff Alogo recalls KPC’s early days with minimal resources and highlights the company’s growth, including the use of advanced fire trucks and emergency response protocols. Firefighter Josephine Dokhole also shared her experiences breaking gender stereotypes and responding effectively to multiple emergencies at JKIA.
Beyond training, KPC has built a comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) management system. Safety awareness initiatives, hazard audits, and environmental programs, such as tree planting and pipeline safety campaigns, are ongoing efforts. New technologies like SCADA systems and automated fire suppression have greatly enhanced real-time monitoring and risk management.
KPC has also launched the Safety Observation and Corrective Action (SOCA) platform for reporting hazards and a 24-hour public emergency hotline. Their commitment to sustainability includes using solar energy, energy-efficient technologies, and conducting environmental impact assessments for new projects.
In the aftermath of the Embakasi LPG tragedy, KPC collaborated with the Kenya Red Cross to conduct fire safety awareness campaigns and community training. They also participate in industry safety groups and joint emergency drills to strengthen their emergency response capacity.
Long-serving electrician and trained firefighter Bernhard Mandu praised KPC’s strong safety culture, which prioritizes life, property, and environmental protection. His experience responding to major incidents, such as the 2011 Sinai fire, showcases the company’s hands-on readiness.
Through investments in technology, training, and community engagement, KPC has proven that safety is not just a policy, but a core value embedded across all its operations.
