The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Ketraco) has signed a Project Agreement with Adani Energy Solutions Limited.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi announced that the project is estimated to cost Sh95.68 billion (USD 736 million).
Under the agreement, Adani Energy Solutions will manage the transmission line for 30 years, ensuring sustainability and efficiency before transferring the project and its assets to Ketraco.
Wandayi noted that the signing process has been in progress for the past four months.
“I am pleased to announce the successful signing of the Project Agreement between Ketraco and Adani Energy Solutions today,” Wandayi stated. “This agreement marks the start of a transformative initiative to develop, finance, construct, operate, and maintain crucial transmission lines and substations across Kenya.”
He emphasized that the project will enhance the national electricity infrastructure, ensuring reliable power access to support Kenya’s growing economy and development objectives.
“All Kenyans are aware of the significant challenges posed by persistent power outages,” he added.
Wandayi explained that the Project Company will secure all funding through debt and equity, to be repaid over the 30-year agreement.
“The project cost, currently estimated at Sh95.68 billion (USD 736 million), will be finalized through a competitive bidding process jointly managed by Ketraco and the Project Company, ensuring value for money for the country,” he said.
He also mentioned that the competitive bidding process will prioritize local content and business opportunities for Kenyans.
Wandayi assured that the government will incur no financial expenditure for the project and will benefit from world-class energy infrastructure.
He stated that Ketraco conducted thorough due diligence on Adani Energy Solutions before signing the agreement.
This project highlights the government’s commitment to strategic partnerships that align with national development goals.
Wandayi expressed confidence that the collaboration with Adani Energy Solutions will ensure long-term management and maintenance of these vital infrastructure assets, securing the future of Kenya’s energy supply.
“The government remains dedicated to supporting the timely and successful implementation of transformative development projects like this,” he said. “We believe this initiative will strengthen our energy infrastructure and contribute to the country’s economic and social transformation.”
