Kenya must repay or refinance about Sh1.7 trillion of public debt before June 2027, according to the National Treasury’s latest Annual Public Debt Management Report, as reported by Business Daily on October 11, 2026. The sum equals 12.7 percent of the country’s total public debt and falls due within one year from July 1. The timing is awkward: the General Election is scheduled for August 2027, and Treasury CS John Mbadi’s delegation is in Bangkok this week for the IMF and World Bank annual meetings.

How much Kenyan debt is due before June 2027?

  • Total falling due: about Sh1.7 trillion, covering the 12 months from July 1, 2026.
  • Share of public debt: 12.7 percent of the total stock.
  • Principal portion: about Sh1.06 trillion, according to a Kenya Today report that cites the Business Daily figures.
  • Source: the Treasury’s Annual Public Debt Management Report.

Business Daily described the repayments as a “refinancing headache” ahead of the 2027 polls. The Treasury has two broad options: raise fresh money from domestic or international lenders to pay off the maturing loans, or squeeze the budget to find cash. Both carry a cost.

Why does refinancing matter for ordinary Kenyans?

When the Treasury borrows to repay old loans, it has to accept whatever interest rate the market asks at that moment. If rates are higher than when the original debt was issued, the bill grows. That money then competes with spending on hospitals, schools and roads.

Analysts quoted in the Kenya Today report say heavy repayment pressure limits funds for health, education and infrastructure. They also warn that new taxes risk more public opposition, while spending cuts could hit service delivery. Debt-justice expert Iolanda Fresnillo said Kenya has leaned on spending cuts and tax increases, which have sparked protests, particularly among young people.

The interest-rate backdrop is already in focus. The Central Bank of Kenya’s October decision kept the policy rate at 8.75 percent; see our earlier coverage of the CBK rate decision for October 2026.

What is Kenya asking for in Bangkok?

The IMF and World Bank annual meetings run from October 12 to 18 in Bangkok. Kenya’s delegation is led by Treasury CS John Mbadi and Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, and is expected to discuss economic stability, development financing and the global outlook, Kenya Today reported. Kenyans.co.ke also reported on October 12 that Mbadi had arrived in the Thai capital.

Kenya’s previous IMF programme stalled in 2025 before its final review was completed. There is no remaining tranche and no replacement deal in place. Kenya Today reports the Fund has signalled programmes with fewer reforms but deeper changes in the areas they cover, an approach some governments, Kenya among them, view with caution.

What this means for the 2027 budget

With the next election in August 2027, any new tax measure or deep cut in the 2027/28 budget will land in the middle of campaign season. Other pressure points are visible elsewhere in the economy, from tax disputes with flower farmers to the debt problems facing tea farmers. As of October 2026, the Treasury has not published a detailed repayment calendar in the coverage reviewed for this report.

FAQ: Kenya’s public debt repayments

How much debt does Kenya need to repay before June 2027?

About Sh1.7 trillion, or 12.7 percent of total public debt, according to the Treasury’s Annual Public Debt Management Report as reported by Business Daily.

Does Kenya have an IMF programme now?

No. The previous programme stalled in 2025 before its final review, and there is no replacement deal, Kenya Today reports.

Who is representing Kenya at the Bangkok meetings?

Treasury CS John Mbadi and PS Chris Kiptoo lead the delegation. The meetings run October 12 to 18.

Will repayments mean new taxes?

The Treasury has not said so. Analysts say the options are refinancing, new taxes or spending cuts, and each carries political risk.

For the Treasury’s own figures, see the National Treasury website.
