Japan’s Director General of African Affairs, Horiuchi Toshihiko, is visiting Kenya for the inaugural Japan-Kenya Policy Dialogue. Following reciprocal state visits in recent years, the visit builds on 60 years of diplomatic ties, focusing on economic cooperation, infrastructure development, and broader collaboration across health, education, and climate change.
Horiuchi emphasized Japan’s commitment to sustainable, transparent development financing and highlighted Kenya’s role as a hub for addressing regional challenges, such as through partnerships like the Kenya Medical Research Institute.
The diplomat also discussed the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad), noting Kenya’s significant contributions and Japan’s continued investment in geothermal power and integrated transport facilities.
Horiuchi reiterated Japan’s interest in strengthening cultural and educational connections, as seen in programs like the ABE Initiative, which has provided academic and professional opportunities to young Kenyans.
