Despite the ongoing anti-government demonstrations in major cities, the tourism industry in Kenya remains resilient. According to the Ministry of Tourism, hotels across the country continue to receive visitors without significant disruption.
During the opening of a Safety and Security Capacity Building Workshop for the tourism sector in Mombasa, Tourism PS John Ololtuaa emphasized that tourists are still arriving in Kenya. “Our hotels are receiving guests seamlessly, and we are pleased with these numbers, which we hope will continue to grow,” he stated.
Ololtuaa highlighted the government’s commitment to collaborating with county officials and tourism stakeholders to ensure a secure environment for development. The workshop aims to equip industry players with knowledge and skills, fostering best practices in safeguarding the sector.
“Our goal is to identify risks and implement strategies to ensure the sustainability of the tourism industry, ensuring that tourists remain unaffected,” he explained. The overarching objective is to secure and promote Kenya as a premier tourism destination, enhancing the “Magical Kenya” brand.
Susan Ogallo, CEO of the Kenya Tourism Federation, echoed these sentiments, noting that no guests have been adversely affected by the demonstrations. However, the protests, which have now entered their third week, have seen incidents of violence and property damage by individuals infiltrating the protests.
“We are coordinating with the tourism police and general law enforcement to guide tourists away from potential conflict areas,” Ogallo added. She emphasized that in the past year, incidents of insecurity involving tourists have significantly decreased.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor assured both residents and visitors of their safety, stating that the county will no longer tolerate protests that escalate into violence. He confirmed that adequate security measures are in place and encouraged tourists to explore what Mombasa has to offer.
Furthermore, Noor announced a crackdown on those responsible for the recent violence, vowing to apprehend all individuals involved in the looting and destruction of property.
Mombasa’s chief officer for trade, tourism, and culture, Pauline Oginga, reaffirmed the county’s dedication to enhancing security, including plans to install additional CCTV cameras and establish a Mombasa Tourism Safety Centre to coordinate safety activities and provide real-time updates on potential threats.
