Agriculture PS Paul Rono has assured farmers that the government has secured 5.9 million bags of fertilizer to support the upcoming March-April-May long rains planting season. Over two million bags have already been distributed to more than 179 National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots and cooperatives, focusing on counties where planting is currently underway, such as Bomet, Narok, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, and parts of Kericho and Nakuru.
To enhance accessibility, the Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with county governments to establish additional last-mile stores for fertilizer and essential farm inputs. Meanwhile, Kenya Dairy Board Managing Director Margaret Kibogy has encouraged dairy farmers to embrace silage making and grass production during the rainy season to ensure consistent milk supply and quality feed storage.
The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts near-to-above-average rainfall for most parts of the country, with early rainfall expected in some regions by February. However, some areas, including the Central Rift Valley, Southeastern lowlands, and parts of the Coast, may experience below-average rainfall. Farmers are advised to align their planting activities with the expected rainfall patterns to maximize yields.
