Between 2017 and 2020, tensions between police and residents in Mathare, Dandora, and Kibera were at an all-time high. Security forces intensified surveillance, deploying undercover crime units, some allegedly using fake number plates. Arrested individuals often turned up dead or disappeared without a trace.
In response, local activists formed social justice centers to track missing persons and support victims’ families in seeking justice. One such center, the Dandora Community Justice Centre, was co-founded by activist and musician Alaman James (Brian James Omondi). Using music and advocacy, he promotes police accountability and human rights.
Over time, relations between law enforcement and the community have improved. While James still faces threats for his activism, he remains committed to ensuring justice and protecting vulnerable individuals.
