NAIROBI — Stanbic Bank Kenya has appointed Michael Mutiga, a former Safaricom executive, as its new Chief Executive Officer, with the appointment taking effect August 1, 2026, subject to regulatory approval, the bank announced.
Mutiga joins Stanbic from Safaricom Plc, where he most recently served as Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer, according to reporting by TechCabal and TechAfrica News. He brings more than 20 years of leadership experience across banking, telecommunications and digital financial services.
He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) from Temple University and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB, Honours) from the University of Nairobi, according to The Kenya Times.
The bank’s board thanked Abraham Ongenge, who had served as Acting Chief Executive since March 1, 2026, for ensuring operational continuity and advancing key strategic priorities during the transition period, according to HapaKenya.
Mutiga’s appointment reflects a broader trend of commercial banks recruiting leadership with digital finance and telecom backgrounds as competition from fintechs and mobile money operators intensifies.
Stanbic Bank Kenya is a subsidiary of Standard Bank Group, one of Africa’s largest financial services groups.
