Kenya Airways has laid out a plan to nearly triple the size of its fleet over the next decade, growing from 32 aircraft today to 100 by 2035, with an intermediate target of 67 aircraft by 2030. The airline unveiled the strategy in Nairobi on July 29 during its annual travel agency awards ceremony, the same event at which it marked the return of its largest passenger aircraft, a 400-seat Boeing 777, to active long-haul service.

The 777 is now flying the Nairobi to London Heathrow route, one of the carrier’s key long-haul markets, after a period out of active rotation.

The numbers behind the plan

Alongside the fleet target, Kenya Airways is aiming to grow passenger numbers from 5.2 million currently to 9 million by 2030, a jump of roughly 73 percent in under four years. The airline is also targeting a 20 to 25 percent increase in intra-African routes as part of the expansion, and it is exploring the development of a second African hub beyond Nairobi to deepen its continental network.

The strategy leans on growing frequency and reach rather than just aircraft count. More planes support more routes and tighter schedules on existing ones, both pieces of the airline’s stated goal of cementing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s position as one of Africa’s busiest connecting hubs, competing directly with Addis Ababa and Johannesburg for transfer traffic between Europe, Asia and the rest of the continent.

Why the timing matters

The expansion announcement lands as Kenya Airways works to stabilise finances that have been under pressure for years, and a fleet nearly tripling in size is a capital-intensive bet regardless of a carrier’s balance sheet. It also comes as regional competitors, including Ethiopian Airlines and Rwandair, have been expanding their own African route networks aggressively, making the contest for hub status and transfer passengers more competitive than it has been in years.

None of the announcement so far includes a confirmed order for new aircraft or financing details for the expansion, both of which are the parts of this kind of plan that tend to determine whether a ten-year target actually gets hit on schedule.
